The Cape Winelands district, on which this study is based, has a population of 892 000 citizens spread across five municipal areas. The area is characterised by high poverty, gang violence, substance abuse, seasonal migration all of which have an impact on the burden of disease. The TB incidence rate is 246 per 100 000 (number of new cases per 100 000 population) and the TB prevalence rate (the number of cases in population at given point in time) is 828 per 100 000 in 2015 (District Health Plan, Cape Winelands, 2018/19 to 2020/21).
